This presentation will be a general discussion by several individuals with experience in the field, discussing how their various companies/facilities manage the coding of Section GG on the MDS.  This will include a discussion on how the information is gathered/documented, the determination of how the items are to be coded, how the data is addressed in Triple check, etc.  Attend this session and get different perspectives on this perplexing topic.


Debra Budge-Brennan, MSN, CRNP-BC; Consultant

Debra Brennan is a Clinical Consultant and Reimbursement Specialist for The Lancaster Group, LLC with over 23 years’ experience in Long Term Care, who holds a master’s degree in Nursing with a specialty in Family Nurse Practitioner, and acute care experience. Prior to joining The Lancaster Group, Debra served as Regional RNAC, Lead RNAC and MDS Coordinator for 10 years with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In that role, she successfully implemented trainings and changes in policies and procedure to those facilities obtaining 5 Star Ratings which resulted in two facilities ranking in the top ten Nursing Homes in U.S. News and World Report in the Unites States. Debra is an expert in the MDS process including performing duties as a multi facility Regional RNAC, MDS trainer for CNAs, Social Services, and MDS Coordinators, expert in Medicare and Medicaid Regulations.  In 2012, Debra had the honor of being chosen out of multiple candidates to be in the first group of professionals to become Interact Certified to Reduce Hospitalizations at Florida Atlantic State University. She successfully completed the certification with 100% implementation in 6 facilities with 1, 440 total beds.  Debra has provided Education in all aspects of Medicare and Medicaid Regulations, Documentation Requirements, completing CAAs and Care Plan Development. She has performed mock surveys and has expertise with Survey Compliance and Plan of Correction. Her extensive knowledge has continued to grow into the positives and pitfalls facing the Nursing Home Industry today including: The Five Star, Valued Based Purchasing, SNF-QRP, and Quality Measures.

I have been in the Long-Term Care arena for 38 years starting my career as a Certified Nurse Aid.  I have been working with the RAI process since it came into play in 1989.   Currently, we service 47 homes in 6 states; PA, IN, MI, MA, NY, and VT.

Natalie Hackett Casey, PT, DPT, RAC-CT; VP Clinicl Strategies; Health Pro Heritage

Natalie Hackett Casey grew up in the Chicago suburbs and currently lives in city with her husband, Tim; son, Phillip; and loyal dog, Petey. She graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) with a degree in biology. She then attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. She started her career in acute care and then moved to acute rehab in several area hospitals. Natalie worked with a diverse group of patients in acute rehab; however, the geriatric population have always had a special place in her heart. She found her home with Healthpro Heritage in early 2017, where she was the rehab director of a prominent 5-star CCRC for over four years before taking a role within the Clinical Strategies division

Cyndi Howell, RN, RAC-CT; Lead RNAC; Willow Valley - The Glen

Cyndi has worked in long term care for 33 years, since the age of 16 when she started as a nursing assistant. She has been a LPN, restorative nurse coordinator, RN, and RN Assessment Coordinator.  In her current role as Lead RNAC and PCC Clinical Liaison, she enjoys developing processes in Point Click Care to improve staff efficiency while maintaining compliance.  She works for a large CCRC in Lancaster County who was recently named by Newsweek as the #1 nursing home in PA for the third year in a row.


1 Contact hour has been requested for this continuing nursing education activity. Criteria for successful completion include attendance for the entire event and submission of the evaluation form.
